Bowdoin College is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the country. And that means it also has some of the oldest buildings, dating as far back as the early 1800s. In an effort to achieve net zero carbon emissions by the year 2042, the college is undertaking an ambitious plan to invest more than $100 million in renovations and a new electrified heating system for the campus. About 12 schools, including Bowdoin, Bates and Colby are carbon neutral, out of 400 that have pledged to reach carbon neutrality as soon as possible. But the goal at Bowdoin is to become net zero.
