RESTORE wants to bring back to ecological health a big chunk of turf that most have written off: New England.

Our Mission

The mission of RESTORE: The North Woods is to create new national parks, save natural forests, and protect endangered wildlife. RESTORE is a non-profit membership organization founded in 1992 by veteran conservationists and grassroots activists. We are grassroots based, using advocacy, public education, and citizen activism to address the root causes of our ecological crisis — not just the symptoms.

Our Successes

  • Filed petitions that led to the protection of the Atlantic salmon and Canada lynx under the federal Endangered Species Act

  • Campaigned for 3.2-million Maine Woods National Park & Preserve, laying the groundwork for President Obama's  2016 designation Katahdin Woods Woods and Waters National Monument

  • Won a lawsuit protecting pristine Loon Pond from ski area development in the White Mountain National Forest

  • Won legal protection for a rare old-growth forest on Mount Wachusett in Massachusetts

  • Helped to lead a coalition that saved Henry David Thoreau's birthplace

  • Stopped a proposal to increase motorized access to the Allagash Wilderness Waterway

  • Took legal action which has held back massive real-estate development around Maine's beautiful Moosehead Lake

  • Pioneered efforts to restore the wolf to the Northeastern United States

  • Launched the New National Parks campaign to help grassroots groups expand parks across America
