Opinion: We can’t compartmentalize climate change

BANGOR DAILY NEWS • April 22, 2023

It is time to face the challenge of climate change. We cannot afford to delay any longer. To avoid catastrophic irreversible climate change, industrialized nations must join together immediately to slash greenhouse gases in half by 2030 and then stop adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere by the early 2050s. The American Medical Association in 2022 declared “climate change a public health crisis that threatens the  health and well-being of all individuals” and committed to advocating for policies that will “limit global warming to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius.” Medical societies throughout the world agree that this is the biggest public health crisis ever, but it is also the greatest global health opportunity. Vote for leaders who will act on climate. Call on your policymakers at all levels of government to act now with strong climate policy. Tell them your doctors advise it. ~ Paul Potvin, senior member, Maine Medical Association
