Letter: Outdoor cats will be outdoor cats

PORTLAND PRESS HERALD • March 7, 2023

The subject of outdoor cat trespass came up as a bill in Illinois, when Adlai Stevenson II was governor (1949-1953). Stevenson opposed the bill then, saying that cats were used to “a certain amount of unescorted roaming” and that the relationships between cat and bird was an old one, as was the relationship between bird and worm. Stevenson ran twice for president on the Democratic ticket (1952 and 1956). and he served as our ambassador to the United Nations. I agree with his judgment on this matter. ~ Janet Kearin, South Portland
