On the morning of New Year’s Eve, more than 200 birders descended on Georgetown to catch sight of a rare Steller’s sea eagle, a wayward raptor from Asia that had been making its way around North America. In the following weeks, more than 1,000 birders descended on the Midcoast from all over the country to catch a glimpse. By the time the massive raptor moved on to Newfoundland in April, the sea eagle had attained rock-star status among birders. Its most recent sighting was in Newfoundland on Sept. 2.Now the big question is: Will the bird again choose Maine as its wintering grounds?
