Editorial: Maine cities should take advantage of opportunity to grow

PORTLAND PRESS HERALD • July 13, 2022

Which Maine cities are going to take all the interest from new residents and housing developers, and turn it into something special? Making sure a community gets the right kind of development is a team effort – good ideas can come from anywhere. For example, if one of the selling points is that it’s within walking distance of the shopping center, then city leaders should make sure walking and bicycling are safe there. But what they can’t do is just say no. A city that chooses not to grow will only find itself worse off than those that do. The cities that thrive in coming years will be the ones that create an environment for people from all walks of life.
