Editorial: Holding public officials accountable

MAINE ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS • February 16, 2022

On Wednesday, a investigative report by the Department of Interior Inspector General, a Trump appointee, revealed that Donald Trump’s former Interior Secretary, Ryan Zinke, misused his position to advance a commercial development project in his hometown and he lied to an agency ethics official about his involvement. Trump and Zinke caused massive wreckage to our land and water protection programs. So catching Zinke in this infraction may seem a small matter. We will probably never know the full extent of the malfeasance and corruption by the Trump Administration. It would take millions of dollars and years to investigate, document, and prosecute all of the crimes and misbehavior. However, there is value in exposing examples of the lies and damage done as a deterrent to future public officials. The big question is whether the boss will be held accountable.
