Opinion: Despite setbacks, ocean power shows great promise

BANGOR DAILY NEWS • November 14, 2022

A recent story (“12 years later, company still isn’t harnessing Eastport’s powerful tides”) failed to present the larger picture of our pioneering work. Ocean Renewable Power develops systems and projects that generate electricity from free-flowing river and tidal currents. The company has matured into a globally competitive firm providing energy solutions to areas of the world in most need. We are sifting through market inquiries from 45 countries, 20 U.S. states and 11 Canadian provinces. One of the largest engineering firms in the world led a $25 million investment in Ocean Renewable Power in 2021 in recognition of the global market need for our products and solutions. This year we released nearly $1 million in contracts to eight Maine-based companies to manufacture power system components and assist with related electrical requirements. Together with more than 300 partners, contractors and vendors located in 14 of Maine’s 16 counties, we are creating a new energy future with strong Maine roots and global implications. ~ Stuart Davies and John Ferland, Ocean Renewable Power Co.
