For 35 years, Gary Stellpflug worked for the National Park Service at Acadia. When he retired at the end of August, his job title was trails maintenance foreman, which meant he was responsible for overseeing the 155 miles of trails that run through the park from the shores of Isle au Haut and the Schoodic Peninsula to the summit of Cadillac Mountain—minus the famed carriage trails. To a lot of people that would sound like a dream job, and Stellpflug relished it.
