Letter: There’s no such thing as a free electric vehicle charger

PORTLAND PRESS HERALD • July 15, 2021

Having owned a bed-and-breakfast in Maine, about 2014 we had the promotional installation of twin electric vehicle chargers from Tesla. We had to install a separate breaker box for those lines. We also had a separate meter and became well aware of the charging cost of these vehicles. Fully recharging a Tesla Model S cost us just under $5 on the meter. Providers of chargers will expect to be repaid for their investment, and some margin of profit. This would apply to a state, municipality or service station adding high-speed chargers to their petroleum equipment. Let’s not whine about municipalities charging for what will benefit us all, and what will bring us all closer to a livable planet with a more stable climate. ~ Scott Gile, Orrs Island
