Star names by ancient astronomers were not whims but expressions of certain kinds of highly refined knowledge that was not empirical. In the ancient experience, the stars were forces, detectable through fear, that we are obliged to pay respect to. The ancients would no doubt be astounded to know what we know. And I have a feeling we would be astounded, or terrified, to find out what they knew. ~ Dana Wilde
