Letter: Natural gas is not a ‘lower-emission fuel’

PORTLAND PRESS HERALD • February 11, 2021

Summit Natural GasCEO, Kurt Adams, is quoted as desiring to provide midcoast towns with a “lower-emission fuel alternative.” Unfortunately, it isn’t so, no matter how he tries to spin it. Natural gas does burn cleaner than oil or coal, but it still emits carbon dioxide. It does emit less carbon dioxide than oil or coal, but its greenhouse-gas impact is just as large. That is because of methane leakage. If you need a new heating system, install heat pumps. They run off electricity, and as Maine acts on its new climate goals and increases the percentage of renewable energy in its overall energy mix, that electricity will get greener and greener. And Efficiency Maine will provide you with a generous rebate. ~ Joe Hardy, Wells
