Winter camping at Maine state parks, public lands, begins Dec. 15

Off-season and winter camping will begin Dec. 15 at select Maine State Parks and on Public Land. For winter camping locations, visit Maine/DACF/parks. State officials suggest that those new to winter camping start off at a Maine state park, rather than on Maine Public Lands. State parks provide the challenge of winter camping, as well as front country and remote sites to test skills without the challenges of Maine Public Lands camping. “Even for the experienced it is good to start the season off with an easily accessible location as a test run before heading out to more challenging terrain,” state DACF officials said. Highly experienced winter campers, or those who will be led by a Registered Maine Guide, are ready for the remote settings found on Maine’s Public Lands, officials said. Also, a reminder, that Baxter State Park is not part of the Maine state parks system. For information on winter camping at Baxter, visit baxterstatepark.org.
