SoPo residents seek tighter regulations, accountability for oil tank emissions

For years, South Portland residents have noticed smells of gas and chemicals in the air, varying depending on time of day, wind, and weather conditions. The odors, coming from nearby oil tanks, have brought community members together around health concerns, seeking information about what exactly is in the air they’re breathing. Now, dissatisfied by the conclusions of a state assessment on the toxic emissions from surrounding oil tanks, residents of South Portland are expected to bring their complaints to a public meeting on Jan. 25 to call on City officials to take action to regulate the emissions. And on the state level, the report and accompanying public input may lead to the creation of a bill that would set new mandates for oil companies.
