Mysterious object found in Hampden woods is giant moth cocoon

After viewing photographs of a mysterious object found in the woods of Hampden, several Maine scientists have arrived at the same conclusion: it’s the cocoon of a giant moth. They believe it to be the cocoon of a cecropia moth (Latin name: Hyalophora cecropia), which is the largest moth in North America. “It’s pretty cool to see the life cycle and learn about something you don’t see everyday,” said Tony Valcourt, who was hiking with his dog on April 6, when he found the cocoon attached to the bark of a young tree. “I’m glad that a lot of people will know what it is if they come across one now.”
