Plastic Beach, Searsport

On December 2, a pair of 2,900-pound bales of compacted plastic waste fell from a cargo ship unloading at Mack Point terminal in Searsport and were not retrieved. The incident went unreported until six days later when Bob Brennan of Stockton Springs found pieces of the bales and strewn plastic debris while walking his dog on the beach at Sears Island directly across from the port and called Maine Department of Environmental Protection. Five days later pieces turned up on Islesboro.
