“People have been doing this since the ’70s,” said Zack Rouda of Rewild Maine. “But when I started Rewild Maine I thought there should be wild edible walking tours in every town in America. They’re not. We need to keep those skills alive and to find the most sustainable ways of living.” Offered by the nonprofit Rewild Maine, classes teach people how to connect with nature while becoming more resilient and less dependent on commercial products. Foraging, particularly for mushrooms, has increased in popularity in recent years, especially during the pandemic. But those who lead urban foraging walks around the country say such classes still are uncommon in downtown areas.
